  These thymes spread across the ground and are less than an inch tall. They can be grown between paving stones, next to paths, or in beds with other spreading thymes.

 This is the most common matting thyme. Scentless green leaves create a solid, slightly spongy mat over soil or stone. Pink flowers float above the leaves in late spring. Minus thyme is often sold as Elfin Thyme. Images: whole plant.

 No photos of this unusual thyme. Extremely slow growing (and thus hard to propagate), with miniscule leaves. Once you've seen true Elfin thyme, you'll never mistake Minus thyme for it.
